Becoming An Architect Is My Objective

I always loved the idea of a renaissance man when I was younger. The ability to be versed in many different areas of knowledge and expertise while at the same time truly understanding people and culture. Although this is a daunting goal to achieve, I feel that my path to become an Architect has helped me significantly to understand the world around me.

“For me, in order to make a good building, you must think at both a macro and micro scale in a network setting.”

In other words, how does the building function as a whole within it’s surroundings (environmental, cultural, aesthetic, ect.). As well as how a single person or element will interact with objects or other people within a set amount of variables you’ve designed. Understanding the overall synthesis of how these elements all work in conjunction is what I find truly exciting and is why I became an Architect.

The Journey Is Not Easy

The most common struggle is allocating time to worthy tasks. Which is really just a way of saying “don’t procrastinate.” There will always be those moments where you don’t feel like working on whatever it is that will help you reach your goals and get distracted (tv, top 10 list of whatever on some blog, drinking, ect). If you find that your goals aren’t reason enough to stop procrastinating, then it might mean you need to re-adjust your goals.

The Opportunity To Work On Cool Projects Is Awesome

Although I am still relatively new in my career, I’ve had the pleasure to work on some amazing projects. Most notable is the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia which is slated to be the next tallest tower when it is topped out at over a thousand meters tall. Aside from its shear stature the technology used in designing structure and coordinating such a massive undertaking is what I find inspirational. Other projects I’ve worked on include master plans in Europe, towers in China, a Hotel concept in Dubai, and numerous competitions. Through all of these projects, I’ve come to appreciate how advances in computational modeling and analytics are pushing the envelope with regards to what we are now able to design. Also the utilization of 3d printing and augmented reality as tools to share ones vision have become great assets for an Architect.

Here are 5 Tips To Save Your Presentation’s Life

  1. Never “wing it.” People can tell, and will loose respect for you.
  2. Learn how to properly use visual aids.
  3. If you bring a model, put it out front where everyone can clearly see it. Make sure your images are clear and that your diagrams can be followed by anyone not in your profession. Use a clear color scheme. Too many colors will look like you had a first grader draw it.
  4. Know your clients.
  5. Whether clients travel half way around the world or just down the street to meet you, they are still taking time out of their day to listen to what you have to say. Use this time to focus on the important issues and not something that can be explained in a simple email or conference call.

Tashio is an architectural designer at Gensler Chicago. Prior to Gensler he worked for three years at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill. While working on a variety of projects ranging from skyscrapers to master plans, he has used computational modeling and analytic tools to find the best solutions to enacting environmentally conscious design within the built setting. In his pursuit to become something akin to a renaissance man he also enjoys reading tech and science journals, taking sketch trips, and overall trying to learn just a little about everything. His favorite quote: “today is the tomorrow that you thought about yesterday.”
